National Park Plan

Deckblatt NationalparkplanThe medium term aims and measures for the management of the Bavarian Forest National Park are formulated in the National Park Plan, in accordance with the National Park Regulation. These act as guidance for the national park administration in its day-to-day work and provide other organisations and institutions, as well as interested citizens, with important information. Through agreement with the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry, the Bavarian State Ministry for Economy, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology, the Local government National Park Committee and the National Park Advisory Board, the National Park Plan has been put on a firm footing. The plan contributes significantly to the progress and development of the national park in terms of nature conservation and to the well-being of the local population and visitors.

The National Park Plan consists of ten volumes. In addition to the Concept and Aims of the National Park it considers the following areas of work: Species and Habitat Conservation, Forest Conservation and Forest Stewardship Measures, Education and Recreation Facilities, Hoofed Game Management, Renaturation, Uses and Licences, Route Network, Research, and Information and Public Relations.

The natural zone of the national park, in which animals and plants can develop free of human intervention, is to be enlarged in stages to 75% of the total surface of the park, as outlined in the National Park Regulation. The conservation of species and habitats is also to be expanded. In this way, the areas of retreat for capercaillie and lynx will be improved. Also planned is the renaturation of mires and areas of running water. The former mountain pastures (Schachten) are a special feature of the national park’s forests, and the matgrass meadows here are also to be maintained in the future, in order to conserve their specific plant and animal worlds.

Another important task is to provide children and adults with an understanding of the extraordinary natural heritage of the Bavarian Forest National Park. As such the Bavarian Environment Ministry funds the operation of the three large information and environmental education establishments of the national park through annual support of around €1.3 million.
